Learning a new language can feel difficult at first. You see unfamiliar words, hear new sounds, and sometimes wonder where to begin. But from my experience teaching languages, I have found that beginners do not need to learn hundreds of words on the first day.
A better approach is to start with a small group of useful, everyday words and gradually use them in real sentences.
If you are beginning to learn Uzbek, this is a good place to start.
Uzbek is the official language of Uzbekistan and is also spoken by communities in several other countries. For Indian students and professionals, learning Uzbek can be particularly useful for travel, business, translation, tourism, education, and medical tourism.
In this article, I have selected 20 simple Uzbek words that beginners can learn and start using immediately.
1. Salom β Hello / Hi
Uzbek: Salom
English: Hello / Hi
This is one of the easiest Uzbek words to remember.
You can use Salom when greeting friends, classmates, colleagues, or people you know.
Example:
Salom! Qalaysiz? β Hello! How are you?
2. Rahmat β Thank You
Uzbek: Rahmat
English: Thank you
You will hear this word frequently in everyday Uzbek conversations.
Whenever somebody helps you, gives you something, or does something kind for you, you can say:
Rahmat! β Thank you!
A simple word, but an extremely useful one.
3. Ha β Yes
Uzbek: Ha
English: Yes
Ha is used to agree with someone or answer a question positively.
Example:
Siz talabamisiz? β Ha.
Are you a student? β Yes.
4. Yoβq β No
Uzbek: Yoβq
English: No
The opposite of ha is yoβq.
Example:
Siz shifokormisiz? β Yoβq.
Are you a doctor? β No.
Beginners should pay attention to the apostrophe in yoβq, because Uzbek pronunciation includes a sound that may be unfamiliar to English speakers.
5. Yaxshi β Good / Fine
Uzbek: Yaxshi
English: Good / Fine
This is one of the most useful Uzbek adjectives.
You can use it to describe something positively or answer a question about how you are doing.
Example:
Yaxshiman. β I am fine.
You will quickly become familiar with this word when learning everyday Uzbek.
6. Yomon β Bad
Uzbek: Yomon
English: Bad
Yomon is the opposite of yaxshi.
Yaxshi = Good
Yomon = Bad
Learning words in pairs like this can make vocabulary much easier to remember.
7. Suv β Water
Uzbek: Suv
English: Water
If you travel to Uzbekistan or interact with Uzbek speakers, suv is a very practical word.
For example:
Suv, iltimos. β Water, please.
Once you know a word, try to put it into a short sentence. This is much more effective than simply memorising vocabulary lists.
8. Non β Bread
Uzbek: Non
English: Bread
Non is an especially interesting and culturally important word in Uzbek.
Bread has an important place in Uzbek food and hospitality. If you visit Uzbekistan, you will notice different varieties of traditional bread.
So this is more than just a vocabulary wordβit is also a useful cultural word to know.
9. Uy β House / Home
Uzbek: Uy

Uzbek: Doβst

🎯 How Should a Beginner Learn These Words?
Don’t try to memorise all 20 words in one sitting.
Instead, take five words at a time.
For example, on the first day:
Salom β Rahmat β Ha β Yoβq β Yaxshi
Then make very small sentences with them.
On the next day, add five more.
More importantly, say the words aloud. Language learning is not only about recognising a word on paper. You need to train your ears and mouth as well.
Listen, repeat, speak, and then try to use the words without looking at your notes.
That small daily practice can make a big difference.
